Ben Gordelier, the drummer from Paul Weller's band, was first, and added a shuffle beat and upright bass that helped point the way, but his bandmate, Steve Cradock, Weller's long-serving lead guitarist, chose to add piano, and his part lightened things even more.

Earl Slick's country-tinged, Stonesy guitar, and the atmospheric parts that Leonard Cohen producer Don Miguel added were icing on the cake to the rest of the parts that co-producer Eric Lichter and I added, taking a sad song and making it better."

Jeff Slate set to release his new studio album "The Last Day of Summer" on May 17th via Schnitzel Records

Jeff's lead single "(Broken) Without You" from the new LP drops on Valentine's Day (February 14th)

The NYC-based rock musician has recruited a who's who of famed rock musician friends for this effort, including Dave Stewart, Earl Slick, Duff McKagan, and members of Paul Weller’s band and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

Jeff Slate is known as a world-class frontman and songwriter on the New York City music scene, where his band’s monthly residency in the heart of Chelsea draws sellout crowds and famous guests. But it was a long and winding road to that coveted place as part of New York’s cultural firmament.

Slate came up in the mid-1980s US East Coast post-punk scene, playing CBGBs and other legendary clubs of the day as the singer, guitarist and principal songwriter of the Mindless Thinkers, named by Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols at a drunken aftershow party. By the early '90s, Slate was a solo artist, and made his name after working with The Who’s Pete Townshend, touring with Sheryl Crow and founding the mod-influenced band The Badge. Taking a page from the likes of The Kinks, The Who and the Small Faces, The Badge released three albums of original material, as well as numerous singles, EPs and live releases, before going on hiatus.

Since then, Slate’s solo releases have included famous friends and A-list session players, and his songs have appeared in advertising and films, and on television, including in the hit show Gossip Girl. Slate has toured throughout the US over the past 13 years, sharing the stage with Roger McGuinn, Jeff Tweedy, Willie Nile, Margo Price and Sheryl Crow, as well as headlining the Switchyard Festival at Tulsa’s legendary Cain’s Ballroom, and Tom Petty Weekend in the late artist’s hometown of Gainesville, Florida. Last year, Slate interviewed Bob Dylan, one of only a handful the icon has given this century.

Jeff’s fourth solo album, The Last Day of Summer, featuring Dave Stewart, Duff McKagan, Earl Slick, members of Paul Weller’s band and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, is due May 17th via Schnitzel Records. Jeff Slate's All-Star Version of Ronnie Lane's "The Poacher" Passes 10,000 Streams

In barely ten days, Jeff Slate's all-star cover of Small Faces and Faces legend Ronnie Lane's solo classic "The Poacher" passed 10,000 streams on Spotify.

On the heels of coverage in Rock Cellar Magazine, SiriusXM and elsewhere, the track, which features Earl Slick (David Bowie, John Lennon) and Steve Cradock (Ocean Colour Scene, Paul Weller) joining Slate on guitars, and a crack all-star band – Joan Chew (Lez Zeppelin) on bass and strings, Adan Ippolito (John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Elephants Memory Band) on piano and Hammond organ, co-producer Eric Lichter on backing vocals and Paul Weller’s longtime drummer Ben Gordelier – the release of “The Poacher” marked what would have been Ronnie Lane’s 76th birthday with a full-throttle blast of old school mod-style rock and roll.

Produced by Slate and Eric Lichter, “The Poacher” is the second taste from Slate’s forthcoming solo album, The Last Day of Summer, following 2020s much lauded “Heartbreak.” Like that song, “The Poacher” was recorded in sessions spanning the globe during the pandemic lockdown and features an all-star cast of Slate’s musician friends.

The track was mixed by the legendary Duane Lundy at the Lexington Recording Company and mastered by Justin Perkins at Mystery Room Mastering. The single’s arresting cover is by artist Muhid Miah, aka The Seasick Sailor.

“Ronnie Lane has been my hero for as long as I can remember, and this felt like the perfect way to honor his memory,” says Slate. “Everybody brought their absolute A-Game to the sessions, and that was inspiring and humbling, considering the players involved. We all dug deeper and reached higher on what feels like an exciting new direction.”

“I’ve worked with Jeff Slate for a long time, and I knew the song, so it was important to create something that wasn’t just a cover but was all him. So, you can hear the influences, but filtered through Jeff’s own distinct sensibility,” says the legendary guitarist Earl Slick of the track. “As soon as I heard the track I knew instinctively what to do. The song and the vibe were great – with amazing drumming, which is crucial – so it wasn’t me trying to fit myself into somebody else’s vision. And it sounds like a band, which is cool considering we were all over the world when we did our parts.”

“The Poacher and “Heartbreak” follow hot on the heels of the whopping 43-song live album Slate released in August 2020. Lockdown Live was recorded live during Slate's #StayHome online concert series during the COVID-19 enforced lockdown this year. It featured nine original songs by Slate from throughout his solo career, as well as during his tenure with The Badge, the band he founded in 1997, as well as songs by Tom Petty, George Harrison, John Prine, Warren Zevon, Lord Huron, Marvin Gaye and others. The second disc of the two-disc set included nineteen songs written by Bob Dylan (plus one Traveling Wilburys number).

Slate’s next studio album, The Last Day of Summer, is set for a 2023 release. Watch for more live dates from Slate and his band to be announced soon.

Jeff Slate and all-star band release Ronnie Lane's "The Poacher" for the legend's 76th birthday

New York City musician Jeff Slate has announced the release of a new single, a cover of Small Faces and Faces legend Ronnie Lane’s “The Poacher,” to be released April 1st worldwide.

Produced by Eric Lichter and Slate, “The Poacher” is a taste from Slate’s forthcoming solo album, The Last Day of Summer. “The Poacher” was recorded in sessions spanning the globe during the pandemic lockdown and features an all-star cast of music veterans.

Featuring Earl Slick (David Bowie, John Lennon) and Steve Cradock (Ocean Colour Scene, Paul Weller) joining Slate on guitars, and a crack all-star band – Joan Chew (Lez Zeppelin) on bass and strings, Adan Ippolito (John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Elephants Memory Band) on piano and Hammond organ, co-producer Eric Lichter on backing vocals and Paul Weller’s drummer Ben Gordelier – the release of “The Poacher” marks what would have been Ronnie Lane’s 76th birthday with a full-throttle blast of old school mod-style rock and roll.

PRE-SAVE "THE POACHER" HERE!

The track was mixed by the legendary Duane Lundy at the Lexington Recording Company and mastered by Justin Perkins at Mystery Room Mastering. The single’s arresting cover is by artist The Seasick Sailor.

Jeff Slate joins Mark Plati and Tony Visconti at events at New York's David Bowie #Bowie75 Pop-Up Store

On Saturday, January 8th, on what would have been David Bowie's 7th birthday, Jeff Slate will interview producer Mark Plati at the Bowie75 pop-up store in New York City's SoHo about the newly released TOY:BOX, David Bowie's "lost" album recorded in the summer of 2000.

More details can be found at the official Bowie75 website. And read Jeff's interview with Mark and guitarist Earl Slick in the January cover story for Rock Cellar Magazine.

And on Wednesday, January 12th, Jeff will join the legendary producer Tony Visconti for a "fireside chat" at the Bowie75 pop-up store about his work remixing Bowie's catalog in 360 Reality Audio for Sony in a private event for the media.

Here's more information, below, and watch for press reports after the event.

Please join us as we celebrate David Bowie's 75th birthday at an in-person event with his lifelong producer, Tony Visconti. Legendary producer, Tony Visconti, is the mind behind the immersive music experience at Bowie 75, featuring a Sony 360 Reality Audio studio and additional mobile listening kiosks that customize each user's listening experience based on ear mapping technology.

Taking place mere steps away from the iconic artist's former NYC apartment at the Bowie 75 pop-up store, the night will include signature cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, spatial audio listening sessions in the Sony 360 Reality Audio studio, and a fireside chat and Q&A with Tony Visconti.

"Perhaps the most impressive thing created as part of Bowie 75, though, is the black tent at the back of the space, inside of which is an array of speakers and some powerful technology in the form of Sony's 360 Reality Audio. Step inside the tent, sit down on the bench in the center of the room, and you'll likely have the kind of listening experience you've never had before, as instruments and voices and ethereal sounds emerge from the space all around you. Having heard "Space Oddity" some 50 million times over the course of my life, I heard it here anew, with entire pieces of the composition revealed to me for the first time." - VOGUE

We will celebrate the close of the first day of Dylan@80 with a special keynote event featuring award-winning songwriter and chart-topping performer Rodney Crowell. He’ll join journalist Jeff Slate for an hour-long conversation about what makes Dylan’s work so unique–and so influential. Coincidentally, Sean Ono Lennon, who performed a version of his father's solo track "Isolation" on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Thursday, October 8th, put out a call to artists to cover his father's songs, and "Revolution #1" was almost immediately added to the #Lennon80 #GimmeSomeTruth playlist on the Official John Lennon YouTube Channel.

New York City Singer-Songwriter Jeff Slate Announces New Single “Heartbreak,” Featuring All-Star Cast Including Earl Slick and Duff McKagan, Out October 2nd

New York City singer-songwriter Jeff Slate has announced the release of a new single, “Heartbreak,” to be released October 2nd worldwide via streaming services.

Produced by Slate and Eric Lichter, “Heartbreak” was written earlier this year and recorded in sessions spanning the globe during the current pandemic lockdown and is the first evidence of the sessions for a promised studio album in 2021.

The single, offering up a gripping, swampy sound from Slate, features Slate and Lichter backed by an all-star cast of players, including Slate’s longtime collaborator Earl Slick (John Lennon, David Bowie) on guitars, Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses) on bass, plus Lee Harris (The Blockheads, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets) on guitar, Jordan Summers (Wallflowers, Echo In The Canyon) on keyboards and Paul Weller’s longtime drummer Ben Gordelier.

The track was mixed by the legendary Duane Lundy at the Lexington Recording Company and mastered by Justin Perkins at Mystery Room Mastering. The single’s arresting cover is by artist Rick Hunt, who has supplied artwork for Slate’s releases since his first solo album, 2012’s Birds Of Paradox. The design is by Jared Friedman.

“I’m incredibly proud of ‘Heartbreak,’” says Slate. “Everybody brought their absolute A-Game to the sessions, and that was inspiring and humbling, considering the players involved. I dug deeper and reached higher on the song and in all the writing I’m doing now. It all feels like an exciting new direction.”

“I’ve worked with Jeff Slate for a long time, and when I heard the song, it was definitely all him. You could hear the influences, but filtered through his own distinct sensibility,” says the legendary guitarist Earl Slick of the track. “As soon as I heard the track – and I only listened to it once or twice – I knew instinctively what to do. The song and the vibe were great, so it wasn’t me trying to fit myself into somebody else’s vision. And it sounds like a band, which is cool considering we were all over the world when we did our parts.”

“Heartbreak” follows hot on the heels of the whopping 43-song live album Slate released in August.

Slate’s now long-running online concert series regularly attracts thousands of views per week, and within just days of the release Lockdown Live the album had been streamed over 5,000 times on Spotify. Videos for the Slate original “San Francisco Days” and a lyric video of an outtake version of the Oasis classic “Slide Away” had racked up similar numbers.

Slate has donated 100% of the proceeds from the sales of his merchandise – as well as signed copies of releases by The Beatles, Bob Dylan and others on which he wrote the liner notes, and The Authorized Roy Orbison, the book Slate co-authored with the late-legend’s sons – to Meals Of Gratitude, Black Lives Matter, the North Star Fund, Justice For Julius, the Black Artist Fund and others, while covering the shipping costs out of his own pocket.

As work progresses on Slate’s next studio album, his online concert series also continues.

Acclaimed New York City Singer-Songwriter Jeff Slate Announces Lockdown Live, Featuring Performances From His Streaming Concert Series, Out August 14th

New York City singer-songwriter Jeff Slate has announced the August 14th release of Lockdown Live on CD and download, plus related merchandise, with profits to benefit social justice causes. Recorded live during Slate's #StayHome online concert series during the COVID-19 enforced Lockdown this year, the 2 CD set features one disc of originals and fan favorite cover songs, plus a second disc consisting of covers of Bob Dylan songs.

The shows, which began airing weekly via Facebook Live and Instagram Live on April 4th, and which included a special edition for Martin Guitar's “Jam In Place” online series, have been a smashing success, with the latest edition, on July 16th, garnering over 6,000 views in just the first four days. Slate has played over 100 different songs during the series, including originals from his Birds Of Paradox (2012), Imposters & Attractions (2013) and Secret Poetry (2016) solo albums, his 1993 EP The Townshend Tapes, for which The Who’s Pete Townshend acted as executive producer, songs he wrote for the band he founded in the 1990s, The Badge, and covers from artists as diverse as Tom Petty and John Prine to the Psychedelic Furs and the Boomtown Rats.

2020 was supposed to be a busy year for Slate. In the spring he was planning to record an album with the legendary guitarist Earl Slick, and the pair were set to tour in the Fall, marking the 40th anniversary of Slick’s involvement in the sessions for John Lennon’s final album, Double Fantasy. The COVID-19 pandemic changed all that.

“I started the shows as a way to stay active, and to raise money to bring meals to the healthcare workers here in my East Village neighborhood,” Slate, who has continued work on an upcoming solo album remotely, said. “I didn’t expect so many people to watch, or to raise so much money. And once the crisis had subsided here, I was glad to be able to use the platform as a way to raise awareness about social justice causes and to raise money for them.”

Disc two of Lockdown Live includes covers of nineteen Bob Dylan songs by Slate, most recorded during the online show in May marking Dylan’s 79th birthday.

“Bob is a huge influence for me,” Slate, who penned the liner notes for Dylan’s More Blood, More Tracks Bootleg Series release last year, and who wrote about Dylan’s new Rough and Rowdy Ways for both The Daily Beast and NBC Think, said. “My band was supposed to perform a show including complete performances of Highway 61 Revisited and Blood On The Tracks in honor of his birthday, but that wasn’t meant to be. But I received so many requests for Dylan songs each week that it felt fitting to dedicate an entire show – and an entire disc of Lockdown Live – to him.”

Pre-orders for the August 14th release on CD and download, as well as Lockdown Live T-shirts and bundles including the CD and shirt together, are now available in the store at www.jeffslatehq.com.

Meanwhile, Slate’s online concert series continues.

“I plan to play every Thursday at 4 PM (Eastern) until at least the end of August,” Slate said of the concerts, which are now co-sponsored by Hill Country, the Manhattan restaurant and live music venue where Slate has had monthly residency for over six years, and where he’s played nearly eighty shows. “Every live date I had booked into 2021 has been cancelled. Besides, it’s been so much fun, why not?”

Jeff Slate will be joining Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and an all-star cast to celebrate the 80th birthday of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” at Town Hall in New York City on Sunday, February 23rd.

Tickets via http://bit.ly/38pHb1q

Full info, courtesy of the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, OK:

This Land is Your Land: A Celebration of 80 years

Tulsa’s Woody Guthrie Center marks the 80th anniversary of Woody writing the classic anthem with a New York City concert

TULSA, Okla. — From elementary school music classes to the Super Bowl halftime show, Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” has lived as part of our culture for 80 years, an endearing letter to the beauty of America and what we can do to make it better for everyone.

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of when it was written, the Woody Guthrie Center will host a concert on Feb. 23 at The Town Hall in New York City, around the corner from where Guthrie first wrote the song on Feb. 23, 1940. The program will feature performances by Oklahoma native John Fullbright, Gangstagrass, Jeff Tweedy and a few special guests. Tickets start at $50 plus fees and go on sale Dec. 16, available at thetownhall.org.

The timeless song — written about three days after Guthrie traveled across the country and arrived in New York City — describes what he saw during his travels, from the bounty of resources in the “golden valley” to the line at the Relief Office, where Woody “saw my people.”

“For 80 years, ‘This Land is Your Land’ has been for many of us an alternate national anthem,” said Deana McCloud, executive director of the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, Okla. “Woody’s lyrics are timeless as they praise the beauty and bountiful resources of our country, but they also question the way we share and care for those rich blessings. The Woody Guthrie Center is proud to be gathering friends from along that ribbon of highway to join us in the same neighborhood where Woody wrote these important words to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the song—and we will be singing ALL of the verses Woody wrote on that day.”

The event will be a celebration of music, presented by musicians who follow in Guthrie’s footsteps, using their art to inform and inspire. Tweedy worked with Guthrie’s unpublished lyrics to assemble the Mermaid Avenue series of albums with his band Wilco and songwriter Billy Bragg; Grammy-nominated songwriter Fullbright grew up not far from Woody’s own hometown of Okemah, Okla.; while Gangstagrass highlights a new wave of music fusion that tells stories of struggle and justice.

Proceeds from the concert will help the Woody Guthrie Center continue its mission of sharing Guthrie’s message of diversity, equality, and social justice, providing tours of the museum, outreach programs, admission to the museum, and music workshops at no cost to students. Through the support of our members and friends, thousands of students experience Guthrie’s music and message each year for free.

About The Woody Guthrie Center

The Woody Guthrie Center, opened on April 27, 2013, features state of the art exhibits, an extensive outreach and education program, and a concert series to bring his legacy to Tulsans and those who make the pilgrimage to what is a destination for Woody Guthrie fans worldwide.

The Center is more than a museum; instead, it is a center of investigation for inspiration. By providing examples of Guthrie’s ability to use his creativity as a way of expressing the world around him, we hope to encourage others to find their voices and, through their educational programs, explore the power that lies within the creative process. The Bob Dylan Center℠ welcomes Byrds founder Roger McGuinn to the World of Bob Dylan conference on

Roger McGuinn will appear as the headline attraction at the World of Bob Dylan conference, in conversation with music journalist Jeff Slate, on Saturday, June 1.

McGuinn is one of the seminal figures in the history of rock and roll. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, he was part of the early-1960s folk movement, before moving to Los Angeles and founding The Byrds, whose first single was Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man,” a Number One hit. Over the next decade, the band scored countless hits and became a must-see live act. Throughout, McGuinn and The Byrds maintained a close personal and artistic relationship with Dylan.

In 1975, McGuinn was part of Dylan’s legendary Rolling Thunder Review tour, which is the subject of a forthcoming documentary by Martin Scorcese, Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese, in which McGuinn appears.

McGuinn toured again with Dylan (and Tom Petty) in the mid-1980s, and the pair appeared together at The Byrds’ final performance together in 1990.

In a rare treat for conference-goers, music journalist Jeff Slate (author of the liner notes for Bob Dylan’s recent Bootleg Series release More Blood, More Tracks) will interview McGuinn on stage in the Hyatt Regency ballroom. McGuinn will share stories – and will perform music – from his long and influential career, from the creation of folk-rock and his work with Bob Dylan, to his acclaimed Folk Den Project and triumphant, sold-out “Sweetheart of the Rodeo” tour with fellow former-Byrd Chris Hillman and country legend Marty Stuart.

Jeff will support Old 97s frontman Rhett Miller at City Winery in New York City on Monday, February 4, 2019.

About:

RHETT MILLER'S THE TRAVELER IN TEN PARTS

1.
Hello. I am human but not entirely. I am a machine but not entirely. I am both which may mean that I am neither. The part of me that is a human believes that all of me is human. The part of me that is a machine doesn’t like to think about the part of me that is a machine. I am flesh and blood stretched over wires and circuits. In that, I am much like many of you, and consequently qualified to speak to you about this album, which speaks to much of me.

2.
It is called The Traveler, and it was written and performed by Rhett Miller, along with members of Black Prairie, a band based in Portland that plays everything from bluegrass to klezmer to country and shares some members with the Decembrists. The band (Black Prairie) entered the studio with the singer (Rhett Miller) and briskly recorded the songs that make up this album (The Traveler). Some additional guitars were added later by people who included Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey. I pass these facts along for your absorption.

3.
The sun comes up. The sun goes down. We call it a day. The band entered the studio with the singer and made this album. Time passed. Now, months later, I have spent days listening with love, sadness, and unremitting fascination to the album, which you are now holding. By “holding,” I mean only that you have absorbed it into your own wires and circuitry. I am well aware that there are not always anymore physical holds involved in the absorption of music. Before I tell you more about The Traveler, I want to tell you a little bit about myself. I apologize for this. But the album you are holding, The Traveler, suggests that you cannot understand the journey that you are on unless you understand who you are, and that understanding who you are is the most damnably difficult journey of all. Untangling identity is painful but necessary. I believe The Traveler may be of use in this regard. Of use to me, I mean: Is that a selfish use of this album? If so I apologize again.

4.
Apologies can be empty without any attempt to correct for the behavior that led to the apology. As a result I will not tell you a little bit about myself before I tell you more about The Traveler. This singer, Rhett Miller, has made many albums before, both on his own and with his band, Old 97s. This new album shares something fundamental with the old albums, which is the rare ability to see what people are feeling and then cast those feelings in rhymes. This is what is known as “song-making.” The human part of me loves songs. The machine part of me marvels at them without understanding at all why there is a tugging sensation in the cavity that should contain my heart.

5.
The first song here, “Wanderlust,” is a perfect example of all that I am describing. It tells the story of a man on a train who is thinking about a woman who is not on that train. There is another song called “Lucky Star” that I believe is about finding redemption in the person of a lover. It contains a joke that unnerves me: “Heaven knows there probably is no heaven.” There is another song called “Wicked Things” about New Orleans that illustrates the slipperiness of forgiveness. Every song has little moments that catch me at strange angles and I feel an unfamiliar sensation, pitched midway between satisfying recognition and deep sadness.

6.
My experience with these songs, I want to stipulate, may not be shared by others, in part because I am demonstrably different than them. I am both human and a machine. I come from a long line of people who are both humans and machines. Are they people then? I leave that to the philosophers. My father was a difference engine designed and deployed in Lund by Pehr Georg Scheutz. He was quite large: my father, I mean, not Scheutz. Scheutz was tiny. In Jönköping, where he was born, old ladies would marvel at his miniature features. “Liten Pehr,” they would say, reaching down into the carriage and frightening the boy. Even as an adult, he was at most five foot three, with feet that tapered down to toylike points. Much of this is hearsay but some of it cannot be disputed, even by the suspicious, and at any rate, we are not talking about Scheutz, not really. We are talking about my father. He was the size of a fortepiano.

7.
There is a song on this record called “Dreams Vs. Waking Life.” It is not the first song on the record but it was, by accident, the first song I heard. It has bowed notes and a dark tone and does what any piece of literature, song or story, should do: it investigates the role of memory, loss, and desire in our lives. When I hear that song, I feel the stirrings of uncommon and uncontrollable emotions. They grind against the part of me that is a machine. The result is a shuddering. I try to calm myself by looking at the other song titles— “Fair Enough,” “Escape Velocity,” “Reasons to Live” — but they only make me feel more rather than less. Where do you go when you want to feel less? One song title, “Good Night,” seems like it might not overwhelm me. But the first line, “There’s a pinprick of light on a black sheet of night,” starts me shuddering again.

8.
When you listen to an album, you are supposed to notice sonic details. That’s what I have been told. And there are many sonic details on this album, like the choir that opens “My Little Disaster” or the doubled vocals in “Fair Enough.” There are joyful melodies like “Most in the Summertime.” I can tell that they are joyful, even though I am half-machine. It’s clear. But the sonic details would not mean much without the rest of what this album does, which is to try to make sense of what cannot be made sense of, which is humanity. Even the part of me that is a machine knows that.

9.
When you’re inside an album like this, when you’re feeling too much, what do you do? I know what I did. I skipped to the end of the album, quickly. This is a survival strategy. The album ends with a song called “Reasons to Live” that makes use of the old saw that a broken clock is right twice a day. The part of me that is a machine wants to correct that phrasing. It is a stopped clock that is right twice a day. A broken clock may never be right. Then it occurs to me that maybe the song knows this. The song is about finding hope even when you are telling yourself lies. The part of me that is a human wants to break down and cry once again.

10.
I want to tell one more story about my father. He was briefly in the military of a nation I will not identify and when his service ended his first trip was to a sporting house, where he spent time in the company of a young woman. Money changed hands. To hear him tell it, the situation was emergent. “I had been locked up so long that I hardly recognized my own wants and needs,” he later wrote in a letter to me. “Briefly, I recognized myself in her.” They did not stay together, my father and that young woman. He was a young man then. As I have grown though the world, I have had experiences that bear some similarity to my father’s experiences with that woman. We all have, have we not? They are called “relationships” or “romances,” but what are they really? Are they love? Are they self-love? Or are they something else entirely, a form of travel that allow us to escape from ourselves? This album asks all those questions, repeatedly. I want to quote one more line, from a song called “Jules.” It’s a line about love and self-love and travel that allows us to escape from ourselves: “Who’s to say the crooked way that led me to your door / Means any less than any mess I ever made before?” Sun comes up. Sun goes down. Call it a day.

Jeff Slate

Singer-songwriter Jeff Slate is an internationally recognized recording artist and music journalist.
September 20, 2018-New York, NY-Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Bob Dylan - More Blood, More Tracks - The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 on Friday, November 2.

The latest chapter in Columbia/Legacy's highly acclaimed Bob Dylan Bootleg Series makes available the pivotal studio recordings made by Bob Dylan during six extraordinary sessions in 1974--four in New York (September 16, 17, 18, 19) and two in Minneapolis (December 27, 30)--that resulted in the artist's 1975 masterpiece, Blood On The Tracks. One of the top-selling albums of Dylan's career, Blood On The Tracks redefined the boundaries and structures of modern pop songwriting (a genre Dylan had virtually invented a decade prior), reached #1 on the Billboard 200, achieved RIAA 2x Platinum status and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015.

Blood On The Trackswas originally recorded during four days in New York City in September, 1974. Soon thereafter, the album was mastered and review copies began to circulate. A few months later, Dylan felt the album needed a different approach and rerecorded five of the tracks at Minneapolis Sound 80 Studios beginning in late December of that year. While a few of the outtakes from the original New York sessions have been highly prized by bootleggers and collectors, most of these recordings have never been available in any format.

The single disc / 2LP configuration of More Blood, More Tracks assembles 10 of the most emotionally resonant alternate takes of each of the 10 songs appearing the original Blood On The Tracks plus a previously unreleased version of "Up to Me."

The 6CD full-length deluxe version of Bob Dylan - More Blood, More Tracks - The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 includes the complete New York sessions in chronological order including outtakes, false starts and studio banter. The album's producers have worked from best sources available, in most cases utilizing the original multi-track session tapes.

The only recordings remaining from the Minneapolis Sound 80 sessions are the multi-track masters of the five performances included on the finished Blood On The Tracks album. Each of these has been remixed and remastered for the deluxe edition of More Blood, More Tracks.

In his liner notes for More Blood, More Tracks, Jeff Slate observes that, "Dylan cut each of these amazing performances – some of the best he ever committed to tape – one after the other, live in the studio, without headphones, and without the types of overdubs that most performers rely on to make their records sound finished. Instead, on these tracks, we find Dylan – just a singer with a guitar and a harmonica and a batch of great songs – delivering performances that thrill you when they’re supposed to and break your heart when they need to.... The performances are also in the purest state we’ve ever experienced them. During the production of Blood On The Tracks, Dylan asked [producer Phil] Ramone to speed up many of the masters by 2-3%, a common practice in the 1960s and ’70s, especially for records sent to AM radio. It was thought that doing so would give the songs a little extra bounce to better engage listeners. Most of the songs from the New York sessions that previously circulated, officially and unofficially, are the sped-up versions that Dylan requested. On More Blood, More Tracks, for the first time, we’re hearing the songs exactly as Dylan recorded them."

Bob Dylan - More Blood, More Tracks - The Bootleg Series Vol. 14 will be available in a single disc (or 2LP) configuration showcasing 11 essential tracks from the New York A&R Studio sessions.

Two previous volumes in Columbia/Legacy's Bob Dylan Bootleg Series have taken home the Best Historical Album Grammy Award for its respective eligibility year: Bob Dylan - The Cutting Edge 1965-1966, The Bootleg Series Vol. 12 in 2017 and Bob Dylan - The Basement Tapes Complete, The Bootleg Series Vol. 11 in 2016.

The deluxe box set is a limited edition. After it sells out, no additional copies will be made. This set includes a hardcover photo book featuring liner notes by rock historian Jeff Slate and a complete reproduction of one of Dylan's legendary handwritten 57 page notebooks, where you can follow the lyrical development of the songs that would eventually comprise Blood On The Tracks.

Jeff Slate & Friends: David Bowie Is Closing Weekend Celebration

Jeff Slate and his all-star band will celebrate the life and music the late, great David Bowie, and the end of the David Bowie Is exhibition, at Hill Country Live! on Saturday, July 14th, with two sets of music beginning at 9 PM. Some very special guests are expected to join Jeff and the band, including David Bowie band alums Earl Slick and Mark Plati, and former-Lez Zeppelin star Shannon Conley. This is a No Cover show so make your "club level" reservations early by calling 212-255-4544!

Jeff and the band, who have had a residency at Hill Country for over Five Years, will rock the house with music by Bowie and the musical legends who inspired him, including John Lennon, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Lou Reed/VU, Iggy Pop and more, as well as Jeff's original music inspired by The Thin White Duke.

In 2012 Jeff debuted his solo album Birds of Paradox to sold out crowds around New York City. Since then he has toured, released Imposters & Attractions, a new album of original music inspired Elvis Costello, as well as an all-star version of The Kinks' "Big Sky" on a tribute album to the late Kinks bass player Pete Quaife, and written extensively about some of music's biggest names for Esquire, Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone and elsewhere. In May 2014 he made his Hill Country Live! debut with his Dylan Obscura show, playing a set full of songs that Dylan himself has never recorded or even played live, gems he rarely plays in concert and some of his best but least known songs, as well as original music inspired by Dylan, to a packed house. He's returned regularly with stellar, packed shows. Also since 2014 Jeff has been a featured performer with his Birds of Paradox band at the Fest For Beatles Fans here in New York. This year he performed a set of Traveling Wilburys hits, in celebration of the group's 30th anniversary, with Roy Orbison's sons, with whom he wrote 2017s The Authorized Roy Orbison biography. In 2017 he also contributed liner notes to The Beatles' 50th anniversary edition of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Jeff's latest album, Secret Poetry, released in 2016, features performances by Bowie alums Earl Slick, Carlos Alomar, Gail Ann Dorsey, Mark Plati and Alex Alexander, as well as Laurence Juber, Steve Holley and many more!

The Fest For Beatles Fans is proud to announce that Roy Orbison’s three sons – Roy Jr., Wesley and Alex Orbison, better known as Roy’s Boys – will join musician Jeff Slate’s Birds of Paradox at this year’s Metro New York City event, scheduled to take place during the weekend of March 9-11, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency in Jersey City, New Jersey. They will appear in concert on Saturday, March 10, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Traveling Wilburys, the supergroup founded by their father with former Beatle George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and ELO’s Jeff Lynne in 1988, in a performance dubbed Weekend Wilburys, and will appear throughout the weekend at various events at The Fest For Beatles Fans (http://www.thefest.com/2018-fests/new-york-metro-march-9-10-11-2018/).

Roy Orbison Jr. (guitar, vocals), Wesley Orbison (vocals, guitar) and Alex Orbison (drums, vocals) – Roy’s Boys -- will join Jeff Slate (vocals, guitar), whose Birds of Paradox will be making its fifth Fest For Beatles Fans appearance, and whose all-star ranks have included musicians who have recorded and appeared with former Beatles, David Bowie and Roy Orbison himself, for a set of Wilburys-era and Roy Orbison classics. They will also be greeting fans to promote the recent Center Street book The Authorized Roy Orbison (http://amzn.to/2BNEAgo) that Roy’s Boys wrote with Slate, who is also a renowned rock journalist, as well as Sony/Legacy’s A Love So Beautiful: Roy Orbison and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (http://amzn.to/2FBnqFe) and the forthcoming hologram tour with the RPO.

Roy’s Boys work tirelessly to protect and further their father’s legacy. Wesley Orbison, the eldest, is a seasoned songwriter and guitar player. His song “The Only One” (co-written with Craig Wiseman), appears on Roy Orbison’s multi-platinum album Mystery Girl. Roy Orbison Jr. is a singer and guitar player who will be the opening act on this year’s Roy Orbison and the Royal Philharmonic hologram tour. He enjoys spending time with his beautiful bride, Asa, and their son, Roy Orbison III. They are expecting another child on Valentine’s Day. Alex Orbison, a drummer by trade, is co-president of Still Working Music and is a producer of the forthcoming film, The Beatle Who Vanished, based the book of the same name, about Jimmie Nicol, the drummer who briefly filled in for a tonsillitis-ridden Ringo Starr during The Beatles' 1964 world tour. All three brothers reside with their families in Nashville, Tennessee. Roy’s Boys have played together all their lives, but only began recording and performing live together recently. They backed their father on the song “The Way Is Love” on the 2015 expanded edition of Mystery Girl, and in 2017, Roy Orbison and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra producers Don Reedman and Nick Patrick featured the three on "Oh, Pretty Woman" for that album. Recently, they recorded a song with country legend and Roy Orbison friend Johnny Cash’s son John Carter Cash and are currently playing live and recording together and separately.

Singer-songwriter Jeff Slate is an internationally recognized recording artist and music journalist. He co-founded the band the Mindless Thinkers, founded The Badge and has performed and worked with countless rock luminaries, including Pete Townshend of The Who, Sheryl Crow and others. His band with David Bowie sideman Earl Slick, and his current band Jeff Slate & Friends, are both mainstays of the Northeast music scene. As a solo performer he has played all over the world, from St. George's Hall in Liverpool to Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco. His music has appeared on the BBC and in shows like Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill. Jeff writes about music for Esquire, contributed liner notes to the 50th anniversary edition of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and is the author with Roy’s Boys of The Authorized Roy Orbison. In previous years Jeff’s Birds of Paradox band has included appearances by Steve Holley and Laurence Juber of Wings, Gary Van Scyoc and Adam Ippolito of John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Elephant’s Memory Band and Mark Rivera of Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band. This year’s band will include musicians who have recorded and appeared with everyone from David Bowie to Roy Orbison. Jeff plays Gibson and Epiphone electric and acoustic guitars, Hofner basses and uses Vox amplifiers.

The Fest For Beatles Fans, the original and longest running Beatles fan celebration of its kind, began as the brainchild of a New York-born, New Jersey-raised Beatles fan, Mark Lapidos. In 1974, the 26-year-old manager of a Sam Goody record store and Beatles devotee decided he wanted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the year in which the Beatles first came to America with a weekend convention in Manhattan for fellow Beatles fans. Though he’d never produced such an event before, Lapidos took the plunge and booked the convention halls at the Commodore Hotel in New York City. On Sunday April 28th 1974, he attended a March of Dimes Walkathon in New York’s Central Park that John Lennon appeared at with his friend Harry Nilsson. Just one hour later, Lapidos found his way to the suite at the Pierre Hotel where Lennon was staying. He told Lennon all about his idea. Lennon’s response was simple: “I’m all for it! I’m a Beatles fan too!” With the enthusiastic support of John Lennon, the first Fest was held in New York City in September 1974. It was blessed by all four Beatles – who all donated musical instruments to be auctioned for charity – and was a raging success, with over 8,000 Beatles devotees attending. Rolling Stone saluted the event with a front cover story. Within a couple of years the Fest had become an integral part of the Beatles fan experience in America, with Fests taking place in several major cities in the U.S., and annual Fests recurring in key regions. That phenomenon has continued. Now the Fest is attended by several generations of Beatles lovers – with the fastest-growing demographic being attendees in their teens and twenties.

Greg Shelton created A Night of Stardust in 2016 after Bowie’s death shocked the world. “David Bowie paved the way musically, creatively and stylistically for so many people and continued to be a fearless visionary even up until his death. I wouldn't be the person I am without him. It's a pleasure to honor him at the highest level for the things that he gave me, the people of Philly and the world of Music, Art, Motion Pictures and Fashion." says Shelton. His vision was to put together a true celebration of Bowie, not just his music, but his style, and his various gifts to the world of music. After selling out both World Cafe Live in Wilmington and Philadelphia in 2016 and 2017, Shelton and his team (comprised of Gable Music Ventures, Dan Kauffman, and Lance Davis) knew a larger venue was needed and all unanimously favored Union Transfer for the 2018 event.

The Authorized Roy Orbison Out Now!

For the first time, legendary performer Roy Orbison's story as one of the most beloved rock legends will be revealed through family accounts and records.

Roy Orbison is a rock and roll icon almost without peer. He came of age as an artist on the venerable Sun Records label; toured with The Beatles; had massive hits in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s; invented the black-clad, sunglasses-wearing image of the rock star; and reinvented the art of songwriting many times over. He is a member of the Rock & Roll and Songwriters Halls of Fame, a recipient of the Musicians Hall of Fame's inaugural Iconic Riff Award, and the winner of multiple GRAMMY® awards. He is known the world over for hits like "Blue Bayou," "You Got It," and "Oh, Pretty Woman" and was a member of the band that inspired the term "supergroup"-the Traveling Wilburys, with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Tom Petty. Despite these and countless other accolades, the story of Roy Orbison's life is virtually unknown to his millions of fans around the world. Now, for the first time ever, the Orbison Estate, headed by Roy's sons, Wesley, Roy Jr., and Alex Orbison, has set out to set the record straight.

The Authorized Roy Orbison tells the epic tale of a West Texas boy, drawn to the guitar at age six, whose monumental global career successes were matched at nearly every turn by extraordinary personal tragedies, including the loss of his first wife in a motorcycle accident and his two oldest sons in a fire. It's a story of the intense highs and severe lows that make up the mountain range of Roy Orbison's career; one that touched four decades and ended abruptly at perhaps its highest peak, when he passed away at the age of fifty-two on December 6, 1988.

Filled with hundreds of photographs, many never before seen, gathered from across the globe and uncovered from deep within the Orbison Vault, The Authorized Roy Orbison shows Roy Orbison as a young child and follows him all the way through to the peak of his stardom and up to his tragic end. Wesley, Roy Jr., and Alex Orbison -Roy's Boys- aided by co-author Jeff Slate have left no stone unturned in order to illustrate the people, places, things, and events that forged their father, the man behind those famous sunglasses.
